Application
Phloxine B has been used to trace the uptake of double stranded RNA by green peach aphids.[1] It has also been used to stain yeast strains.[2]
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phloxine B has been demonstrated as an alternative to Gram staining.[3] It was found to inhibit the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Phloxine B stimulated and inhibited the channel activity of wild-type cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR).[4] It has antibacterial properties. Phloxine B staining can be used to distinguish between gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.[3]
